Opalescent by Jon Hopkins is the best instrumental release I've heard all year. The album dates back to 2001 so I'm sure everyone who's been on top of the music business will think I'm so last year, but three years late is still better than never when it comes to music this powerful. If you, like me, are not up to date with what truly inspiring electronica/ambient sounds like, do yourself a favor and pick this album up at your retailer of choice or amazon.co.uk. It's released by small-fish label Just Music which probably explains why it's so good and yet somewhat unkown to the public.

I actually thought of darkhalo when I listened to the album. The way moods and melodies are presented in the compositions are similar, although Jon Hopkins mixes his ambient work with triphop, whereas darkhalo mixes it with drum'n'bass. Both are part of anyone's common musical education all the same.
